Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi

In the 16th century Ottoman Empire, Mahmud, appointed as a deputy judge from Egypt to Bursa, encounters the influence of Dilaver Bey, a prominent merchant and representative of the city. After starting his duties in Bursa, he investigates the bribery case of the previous judge, who had been exiled. During this time, he meets Üftade Hazretleri, a figure outwardly appearing as a copyist but in reality a great Sufi master. Following the death of his mentor, Nazırzade, Mahmud becomes the chief judge of Bursa. However, a dream and profound spiritual experiences lead him to renounce all his titles and worldly possessions, choosing instead to become a disciple of Üftade. Under Üftade’s rigorous guidance, Mahmud completes his spiritual journey in just three years and is sent to his hometown, Sivrihisar, to guide others. Learning of his master’s illness, Mahmud returns to Bursa, where Üftade, on his deathbed, bestows upon him the name “Hüdayi” and advises him to go to Istanbul. Thus begins Kadı Mahmud's journey to becoming Hüdayi, as he sets off with his family towards the imperial city of Istanbul.
