ANTIOCH ON THE ORONTES

In the ancient world there were 17 cities named Antioch. This six part series is a documentary about one of these cities named Antioch. To distinguish this Antioch from one of the other cities of the same name, it has been referred to in the history books as Antioch-on-the-Orontes. Antioch was the scene of many important events, which had a profound impact on world culture and history. Today, Ancient Antioch is still a viable city and is called Antakya. In ancient times when it was a glittering Roman imperial city of the eastern provinces its population was approximately 500000. We shall endeavour to acquaint you with the history and cultural assets of this city, which in ancient times was qualified as, “The Queen of the Eastern Provinces”. It is interesting to note that the Olympics were also held in this city and floor mosaics considered by authorities to be the world’s best are also reviewed in this episode, which also covers the Hittites, the first people to have ever created an empire. In 2000 BC, Antioch was a Hittite provincial capital and 257 tumuli dating back to this civilization have been discovered. Antioch was “The Queen Of the East”. It was formed by 300 BC by one of Alexander the Great’s commanders, Seleucos I Nicator. The city came under Roman hegemony in 64 BC.
